Applin Evolution: Flapple, Appletun or Dipplin?

All three Applin evolutions share the same base stat total — but only Dipplin goes on to become Hydrapple. Full stat comparison, plus how to evolve Applin in the main games and in Pokémon GO.

Flapple, Appletun or Dipplin?

Applin is the rare Pokémon that makes you commit. Feed it one apple and you get Flapple; a different apple and you get Appletun; a third and you get Dipplin. You cannot undo the choice on that Applin, so it is worth knowing what each branch actually gives you.

Applin Evolution

Applin is the rare Pokémon that makes you commit. Feed it one apple and you get Flapple; a different apple and you get Appletun; a third and you get Dipplin. You cannot undo the choice on that Applin, so it is worth knowing what each branch actually gives you.

The short answer

Flapple, Appletun and Dipplin all have a base stat total of 485. They are not stronger or weaker than one another — they simply spend the same budget differently. The real difference is what comes next: Flapple and Appletun are final forms, while Dipplin evolves once more into Hydrapple and its 540 total.

If you want the strongest end point, pick the Syrupy Apple and take the Dipplin branch. If you want a finished Pokémon right now, Flapple hits harder and Appletun takes hits better.

The three branches, side by side

Every Applin evolution is Grass/Dragon, so they share the same weaknesses — Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug, Dragon and Fairy all hit hard. What separates them is where those 485 points land.

Flapple — Fast physical attacker

Tart Apple · Total 485 · Final form

Flapple puts the most into Attack (110) and is comfortably the quickest of the three at 70 Speed. It is the branch for players who want to hit first and hit hard, and it is the only one of the three that is genuinely offensive rather than defensive.

Appletun — Bulky special attacker

Sweet Apple · Total 485 · Final form

Appletun trades all of that speed away — 30 Speed is the lowest in the family — for 110 HP and 100 Special Attack. It soaks up damage and answers back on the special side, which makes it the most forgiving of the three if you are still learning a matchup.

Dipplin — Defensive, and the only way forward

Syrupy Apple · Total 485 · Evolves again

Dipplin leads on Defense (110) with 95 Special Attack behind it. Taken on its own it is the least exciting of the three. Taken as a step toward Hydrapple, it is the only branch that is not a dead end — and that single fact is why most players pick it.

How to evolve Applin

Main games

Applin evolves by eating an apple — you simply use the item on it, with no level requirement. Tart Apple gives Flapple, Sweet Apple gives Appletun, and Syrupy Apple gives Dipplin. Syrupy Apple arrived in Generation IX, which is why older games only offer the first two branches.

Hydrapple is the one step that is not an item. Teach Dipplin the move Dragon Cheer, then level it up once, and it evolves.

Pokémon GO

Pokémon GO keeps the same three apples but adds a Candy cost. Each branch asks for 200 Applin Candy plus 20 of the matching apple. Hydrapple then wants a further 400 Candy and seven Dragon-type catches with Dipplin walking as your buddy.

That adds up to 600 Candy for a single Hydrapple — the most expensive evolution line in the game. If you are aiming for it, start banking Candy well before you commit.

Pokémon GO figures verified 2026-09-30 during Harvest Festival 2026. Event costs can change — check the official announcement before spending.

Why Hydrapple is the prize

Hydrapple jumps to a 540 base stat total, and almost all of the gain goes somewhere useful: Special Attack climbs to 120 while Defense stays at 110 and HP rises to 106. It keeps Dipplin’s defensive frame and bolts a genuine offensive threat onto it. Nothing on the Flapple or Appletun branches reaches this.

The catch is the cost. Reaching Hydrapple means going through Dipplin, which spends most of the journey as the weakest of the three second stages.

Applin evolution FAQ

Which Applin evolution is best?

For the strongest final Pokémon, Dipplin — it is the only branch that evolves again, into Hydrapple and its 540 base stat total. If you are not chasing Hydrapple, Flapple and Appletun are equal in total stats to Dipplin at 485, so pick Flapple for Attack and Speed or Appletun for HP and bulk.

Can you change an Applin evolution after choosing?

No. Once an Applin has eaten an apple the evolution is permanent for that Pokémon. To take a different branch you need another Applin and the matching apple.

How do you get Dipplin?

Use a Syrupy Apple on Applin. In the main games that is the whole requirement — there is no level condition. In Pokémon GO it costs 200 Applin Candy and 20 Syrupy Apples.

How do you evolve Dipplin into Hydrapple?

In the main games, teach Dipplin the move Dragon Cheer and then level it up once. In Pokémon GO, you need 400 Applin Candy and must catch seven Dragon-type Pokémon with Dipplin set as your buddy.

Are Flapple and Appletun dead ends?

Yes. Both are final forms. Only the Dipplin branch continues, which is the main argument for choosing the Syrupy Apple.

What type is the Applin family?

Every member is Grass/Dragon, from Applin through to Hydrapple. That means they all share the same weaknesses to Ice, Poison, Flying, Bug, Dragon and Fairy attacks.
